Jaw Clenching and Teeth Grinding
Clenching and/or grinding can be very destructive, especially at night time. While sleeping, your chewing muscles can generate a considerable amount of force, which in turn, can cause the enamel on your teeth to wear down and your teeth to fracture.
Clenching and/or grinding can cause TMJ disorders, facial pain, headaches and/or migraines. Eventually, it can cascade to your head, neck, and shoulder muscles, which can cause muscle spasms and pain.
Symptoms of Clenching and/or Grinding:
- Waking up with headaches/migraines
- Frequent headaches/migraines
- TMJ pain (jaw joint pain)
- Sore or painful jaw muscles
- Jaw joint clicking or popping
- TMJ catching or locking
- Limited ability to open and close your mouth
- Pain in your temple
- Ear pain
- Ringing of the ear
- Ear stuffiness or fullness
Headaches caused from clenching and/or grinding
Most headaches are due to muscle contraction and/or spasms. While medications can help reduce headaches for a period of time, the headaches usually return because medications become less effective or higher doses are required. Overuse of pain medication can cause “rebound headaches.” Over time, headaches or migraines transform from an episodic condition to a chronic condition due to excessive intake of medications. Medications also have various side effects such as sedation, euphoria, constipation, anxiety, insomnia, and dependency. It is important to know that medications only treat the symptoms, they do not treat the cause of the problem.
The majority of muscle or “tension type” headaches can be treated with a specialized orthotic appliance which is used to reposition the lower jaw so the jaw muscles are more relaxed and the jaw joints are in the correct position. The appliance limits the amount of force the closing jaw muscles can generate, resulting in the reduction or elimination of headaches, migraines, jaw pain, muscle pain, TMJ pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain.
Dr. Busciglio has treated many patients with chronic headaches, migraines, and facial pain. Most patients report an 80% – 100% improvement of their headaches and/or pains within 2-4 weeks of treatment.
